Metrology License
The primary role of the Legal Metrology Department is to ensure that the weights and measurements used in India comply with proper standards and that the interests of people are covered when buying any packaged item.
Under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, a Legal Metrology Certificate from the Metrology Department of Consumer Affairs is required for the sale or distribution of all packaged goods in India such as export goods, food products, and consumer goods requires.

Application filing process
- The procedure for registration is defined in Rule 15 of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.
- The fee payable is mentioned in the Twelfth Schedule and
- The application format pertaining to the application is described in the Tenth Schedule of the abovementioned Rules.
- Standard weights and measures or parts thereof might be imported.
- Producers or vendors will require enlistment as an importer from the Director of Legal Metrology, GOI.
- The application has to be submitted in the prescribed form, through the State Controller, to the Director of Legal Metrology, along with the prescribed fee of Rs 100, one month before the import. The application will be forwarded by the controller along with a report on predecessors and technical capacities of the importer.
- Registration is valid for 5 years and is renewable.
